Ball Hockey Rules: How the Game Works

Ball hockey is hockey played in running shoes with an orange no-bounce ball. Teams have six players on the floor, five skaters and a goalie, body checking isn't allowed, and most games are three periods. In Canada, most leagues follow the Canadian Ball Hockey Association's rulebook with their own local changes.

Players and Positions

Teams have no more than six players on the floor at once: a goalie, two defence and three forwards, just like ice hockey. Changes happen on the fly. Some rec leagues play 4-on-4 or 3-on-3 to open up the floor.

The Ball

Ball hockey uses a hard plastic, low-bounce ball, usually orange. Balls are rated by temperature, because they get harder and bouncier as it warms up; leagues pick the ball for the conditions they play in.

Contact and Penalties

  • No body checking at almost every rec and adult level.
  • Penalties mirror ice hockey: tripping, slashing, high sticking, hooking, holding and roughing usually mean two minutes in the box.
  • Fighting and checking from behind bring major penalties or ejections.

Periods, Offside and Icing

Most games are three periods; lengths vary by league, with 10 to 20 minutes common. Offside and icing work much like ice hockey in CBHA-sanctioned play, but some rec leagues drop one or both to keep the game moving.

Equipment Rules

Many leagues require a helmet with a full cage or certified eye protection, plus gloves. Goalies wear full protective gear. See our ball hockey equipment list.

FAQ

Is there body checking in ball hockey?

Not in rec and adult leagues. Ball hockey is a no-checking sport at almost every level.

How many players are on a ball hockey team?

Six on the floor (five skaters and a goalie), with rosters of 10 to 15.

Conclusion

Ball hockey keeps hockey's positions, penalties and pace and drops the ice, the skates and the body checks. Check your league's rules for period length, offside and icing, and what helmet you need.
