A retreat shirt is a keepsake, not a uniform

This is the one corporate order where the brief is genuinely different. A work uniform is judged on durability and legibility; a retreat or offsite jersey is judged on whether anyone wears it again afterwards. Most branded company apparel fails that test — it is worn once for the group photo and then lives in a drawer.

What survives tends to have the company logo small and the occasion large: the year, the location, an in-joke from the trip, a list of everyone who was there. The shirt people keep is the one that reads as a memento of a specific week rather than as corporate merchandise, and that is a design decision more than a garment decision.

Colour-coded teams for the activities

Two things make it manageable. Circulate the size charts with the retreat sign-up form so people select their own size privately from real measurements rather than being guessed at — garments are made to order, so an exchange is not as simple as swapping a stock item. And because there is no minimum, ordering a handful of extras in the middle sizes is inexpensive insurance for late additions.

For a mixed group, the more forgiving cuts are worth considering over athletic fits, and hoodies and sweaters are a good alternative for a retreat somewhere cold, where a shirt is going to spend the trip under a jacket nobody can see.

Timing around the trip

Retreat dates are usually locked months ahead, which fits this process well. Free initial artwork, concepts back in three to five business days, then about four weeks in production once approved — so start roughly two months before departure and there is no pressure.

One thing worth deciding early: whether the shirts are handed out on arrival or shipped to people beforehand. If the retreat opens with everyone already wearing them, they need to be in hand a week or more ahead, especially for a distributed team receiving them at home. That moves the whole schedule forward and is the most common reason a retreat order gets tight.
