Ultimate is played seven against seven with a flying disc. You score by catching the disc in the opposing end zone, you can't run while holding it, and you have ten seconds to throw. A dropped, blocked or out-of-bounds pass is a turnover, and players call their own fouls under the Spirit of the Game.

The Field and the Teams
Under the WFDF rules that most of the world (and most Canadian leagues) follow, the field is 100 metres by 37 metres, including an 18-metre end zone at each end. Each team has seven players on the field. Mixed (co-ed) leagues set a gender ratio for each point, often four of one gender and three of the other, alternating.
Starting a Point: the Pull
Each point starts with both teams on their own end zone lines. The defending team throws off, called the pull, and the receiving team starts its attack from where it gains possession.
Moving the Disc
- You can't run with the disc. Once you catch it, you stop and keep one foot as a pivot.
- You have ten seconds to throw. The defender marking you counts out loud ("stalling one, stalling two..."), and reaching ten is a turnover.
- Only one defender can mark the thrower, and they must stay a disc's width away.
Turnovers
Possession switches when a pass is dropped, blocked, intercepted or caught out of bounds, or when the stall count reaches ten. The other team picks up the disc where it stopped and attacks the other way.
Scoring and Winning
A goal is a completed pass caught in the end zone you are attacking. WFDF games go to 15 points, with halftime at 8; rec leagues often play to a lower score or a time cap. After each goal, the teams switch ends and the scoring team pulls.
No Contact, No Referees: Spirit of the Game
Ultimate is a non-contact sport, and most games have no referees. Players call their own fouls and resolve disputes on the field. Spirit of the Game is the rule that holds it together: play hard, know the rules and respect your opponents. Many leagues also score each team's spirit after every game.
FAQ
How many players are on an ultimate team?
Seven on the field, with rosters of 10 to 20 so players can rotate. Ultimate is a running game, so subs matter.
Can you run with the frisbee in ultimate?
No. Once you catch it, you have to stop and pivot. You can only move it by passing.
How long is the stall count?
Ten. The defender counts to ten out loud; if you haven't released the disc by ten, it's a turnover.
Conclusion
Ultimate is simple at its core: pass it, don't run with it, catch it in the end zone, and call your own fouls fairly. Learn the stall count and the pull, and you're ready for your first league night.
